Filet Crochet Table Runner: Build a Repeatable Diamond Chart

White crocheted lace motif illustrating filet crochet chartwork

Filet crochet charts are easier to follow when you decide the grid size before stitching. This table-runner plan uses a 21-block width with a centered diamond. One open block is dc, ch 2, skip 2; one filled block is 3 dc. Use US terms.

Materials and swatch

  • Fine cotton yarn, about 500–700 yd
  • 3.5 mm hook, graph paper, yarn needle
  • ch = chain; dc = double crochet; sc = single crochet

Make a 10-block swatch. Measure across the blocks and adjust hook size until the mesh is open but still square. The finished width depends on your swatch; repeat rows to suit your table.

Foundation and diamond plan

  1. For 21 blocks, chain 65: 3 turning chains plus 3 chains for each block. Row 1: dc in the fourth ch from hook, then repeat *ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch* across.
  2. Work 4 plain rows of open blocks to establish the mesh.
  3. For each diamond row, mark the center block. Fill the center block first, then fill one additional block on each side on the next row, continuing until five adjacent blocks are filled.
  4. Reverse the sequence: decrease the filled blocks by one on each side per row until only the center block remains. Work open blocks in all remaining spaces.
  5. Work 4 plain rows after the motif. Repeat the diamond section as often as desired, leaving at least 4 open rows between motifs.
  6. Finish with a round of sc, working 3 sc in each corner and 1 sc in each row-end along the sides.

Keep the chart square

Count blocks at the end of each row and use a row counter for the motif. Block the runner to its finished measurements and pin the long edges straight. Use a pressing cloth and follow the yarn-care label.
