This small pouch introduces tapestry crochet with a simple two-color diamond. Work tight single crochet stitches and carry the inactive strand inside the stitches. The chart is written as a repeat so you can resize it. US terms.
Materials and stitch key
- Worsted cotton in Color A and Color B, about 60 yd total
- 4 mm hook, 7 in zipper or snap, yarn needle
- ch = chain; sc = single crochet; sl st = slip stitch; BLO = back loop only
Gauge: 16 sc × 18 rounds = 4 in / 10 cm. Finished pouch is about 6 × 4 in.
Base and colorwork
- With A, ch 23. Sc in second ch from hook and across (22 sc). Ch 1, turn. Work 7 more rows of sc to make a flat base.
- Work around the base: 22 sc along one long edge, 8 sc evenly along the short edge, 22 sc along the opposite edge, and 8 sc along the other short edge. Join with sl st. This gives 60 stitches; mark the beginning of the round.
- Rounds 1–3: sc in each stitch, carrying B loosely inside the stitches. Do not pull the carried strand tight.
- For the diamond, use this 11-stitch half-repeat across the front: A, A, A, B, A, A, B, A, A, A, A; mirror the sequence for the second half. Work 2 rounds with B at the center, then shift each B stitch outward by one stitch on the next round to form a widening diamond.
- After the motif, work 5 rounds in A. Fasten off and weave in ends.
- Install a zipper by hand or add a fabric lining. If using a snap, reinforce its placement with a small square of fabric.
Color-change tip
Change colors on the final yarn-over of the previous stitch so the next stitch begins in the new shade. Keep both strands to the inside of the pouch for a tidy reverse side.
