Easy Two-Panel Crochet Poncho Pattern for Beginners

Brown crocheted lace fabric with floral motifs

Two rectangles and two short seams make this simple poncho. The pattern is designed as a customizable construction guide: choose a drapey stitch and try the neckline on before completing the shoulder seam. US crochet terms are used.

Materials and sizing

  • Worsted or DK yarn, 800–1,100 yd
  • Hook that gives a soft fabric, stitch markers, yarn needle
  • ch = chain; dc = double crochet; sc = single crochet; sl st = slip stitch

Gauge: 14 dc × 8 rows = 4 in / 10 cm. Each panel should be about 24–28 in wide and 28–32 in long, or adjust to your preferred coverage.

Panels and assembly

  1. Make a foundation chain that measures the panel width. Work dc in the fourth chain and across. Ch 3, turn.
  2. Work dc rows until the panel reaches the planned length. Make a second panel the same size; block them before joining.
  3. Lay the panels in an L shape: align the short end of one panel with the long side of the other, matching the center points. Seam along one half of the meeting edge, leaving the remaining half open as the neck opening.
  4. Join the other two edges in the same way, keeping the neckline centered. Try it on; open a few stitches if the neck feels tight.
  5. Work one round of sc around the neck and lower edges. Add a second round in reverse single crochet for a firm, decorative finish.

Finishing

Keep the seams loose enough for comfortable movement. Add fringe only after measuring equal lengths, or leave the edge clean for everyday wear. A gentle wash and flat drying help the poncho keep its rectangular shape.
