This scarf uses half double crochet through the back loop to create easy ribs. The width is set by the starting chain; the length is set by the number of rows, so it is simple to adapt for a child or adult. US terms.
Materials and gauge
- Worsted yarn, about 250–350 yd
- 5.5 mm hook, yarn needle
- ch = chain; hdc = half double crochet; BLO = back loop only
Gauge: 13 hdc × 10 rows = 4 in / 10 cm. Aim for a fabric that bends easily without large gaps.
Scarf pattern
- Ch 27 for a scarf about 7–8 in wide. To change the width, add or subtract chains; the stitch count does not need a special multiple.
- Row 1: hdc in the third ch from hook and each chain across (25 hdc). Ch 2, turn.
- Row 2: hdc in the first stitch and in BLO across. Work the final stitch under both loops to keep the edge straight. Ch 2, turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until the scarf measures about 60–70 in, or your preferred length.
- Fasten off, weave in ends, and gently steam-block without pressing the ribs flat.
Optional fringe
Cut yarn lengths twice the finished fringe length. Fold each bundle in half, pull the loop through an edge stitch, and pass the tails through the loop. Space fringe evenly across both short ends and trim level. Skip fringe for a lighter, lower-maintenance scarf.
